The Materials in Society Lecture Series
Supported by Materials Today, the Elsevier Materials Science Council and MRS-Singapore
Tue-30 Jun │ 09:15 – 10:00

The Materials in Society Lecture Series at ICMAT 2015 is the first activity planned by the Elsevier Materials Science Council; and the inaugural lectures will take place on June 30th 2015 in the ICMAT plenary session. The series will highlight the impact materials science has on our everyday lives through lectures that everyone can access, understand and appreciate. Following a call for topic nominations to the materials science community, the first lectures will be given by:

Molly Stevens
Imperial College London, United Kingdom
"Tissue Eengineering: Latest Advances in Materials Science"

This contribution will highlight novel approaches to the use of materials science in tissue engineering that are likely to prove very powerful in the engineering of tissues ranging from bone to cardiac tissue.

Jay Whitacre
Carnegie Mellon University, United States
"Innovating With Materials for Energy Technologies: Challenges and Opportunities"

This presentation will focus on energy storage materials to address some universal themes covering the difficulties and opportunities that come with trying to create and bring new kinds of functional materials to the market.

Bin Liu
National University of Singapore, Singapore
"The Wonderful World of AIEgens"

It has been textbook knowledge that chromophore aggregation usually quenches light emission. The conceptualization of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) changes this general belief and provides a new stage for the exploration of practically useful luminescent materials. The weak emission of AIE fluorogens (AIEgens) as molecular species and their bright fluorescence as nanoscopic aggregates distinguish them from conventional organic luminophores and inorganic nanoparticles, making them ideal candidates for high-tech applications. The talk will showcase the impact of AIEgens in electronic, environmental and biomedical applications.

Recordings of these lectures will available soon after the ICMAT conference via
